Dear Fellow Bulldogs:

The 2016-2017 school year is here.  We have had a productive summer here at Owen-Gage.  We held five weeks of summer school with high hopes to eliminate some of that summer jet lag upon returning.  Mr. Sutherland worked weekly with the girls providing a variety of skills on the basketball court.  They even went to a basketball camp.  The football team has lifted weights with Mr. Wencel and Mr. Robinson throughout the summer and are working to give us a good season.

We are excited to introduce Mr. Byron Williams as our new career advisor for the district this year.  He is very excited and anxious to begin working with our students.  We will be again share this advisor with Harbor Beach.  We are also thrilled to have Mr. Robinson acting as our new elementary resource room teacher, athletic director, and co-assistant football coach.  Mr. Robinson has already shown his dedication and we look forward to having him on staff.

We are proud to announce that our staff’s hard work has paid off too.  We are the recipients of a $10,000 Monsanto Farmer Grant.  The BIG check will be issued during one of our first school events this year.  With this money, the intention is to purchase some 3D printers for the science and math area to promote STEM activities and more experience in the engineering department.  Other staff wrote and received individual grants for their classrooms and will be purchasing supplies for particular lessons and/or taking field trips.

The building has been cleaned and sanitized throughout.   The students also will notice that their new lockers now have tops.  Each student’s combination will be the same as last year except for this year’s seventh graders who will be moving into the old senior lockers.  A list will be kept in the office just in case a student forgets his or her combo.  Again this year we would ask that you talk to your children about not sharing those combinations with other students, including their friends.

Last year we had a change for our older students with a switch to the SAT rather than ACT.  We did not take that change lightly and we offered a PSAT test to grades 8-11 in the fall and then again for grades 9-10 in the spring (this one mandated by the State).  We feel that these practice tests helped in preparing our students for what lied ahead.  This year we will not need those because we will use spring scores to set students up with practice on Khan Academy.  This is a site that links the student scores to exact skills they need to work on.  Students will be able to log on here at school and at home.

Thank you so much for sending and trusting us with your children.  The staff at Owendale-Gagetown Area Schools is excited to be beginning another year and plan to make it a great year for your child/children.
